On this page you’ll find our Game Grades Report© of XCOM 2 & War of the Chosen!
A definite return to form for a historic franchise in the video game industry.
The X-COM franchise has had a cult following since the first release in 1994 known as UFO: Enemy Unknown or X-COM: UFO Defense depending on where you lived. The franchise is often renowned for setting the standard for the roguelike turn-based tactics genre. Fast forward to 2012 and the series is rebooted by Fireaxis Games; a franchise riddled with neglect in the late 90s is reborn and back to basics.
X-COM 2 was a welcomed revamp to the formula X-COM: Enemy Unknown proved is still alive and well. With the fleshed out metagame making tactical decisions all the more weighty, a new take on the Aliens and their abilities, as well as what feels like minor tweaks to the seemingly rigged random number generator. Fans of the series and newcomers alike are welcomed into the story as X-COM 2: War of the Chosen seems to assume its predecessor did not occur. Replay value is strengthened by the modular procedural generator as well as the newly introduced factions.
